FLAG & TACKLE FOOTBALL OFFICIAL – Part-time Saturdays
Position Summary:
Referee 1st – 6th grade football games for our youth flag and tackle football leagues on Saturdays from approximately 9 AM – 4 PM. Season runs from April 14 through May 19.
Certified officials will receive higher pay.

Qualifications:
- Preferably 16 years of age or older.
- Knowledge of rules and game of football.
- Must have good interpersonal and communications skills.
- Promote an atmosphere of cooperation and sportsmanship between players and coaches.
- Consistently and impartially makes appropriate calls and take opportunities to ‘teach’ violating players when infractions and penalties occur.
- Promote character development by demonstrating the Y’s values- caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

BUS DRIVER – Part-time
Position Summary:
Skilled work in the operation of light and heavy school buses in transporting students and staff in a timely manner.
Essential Functions:
- Transports students and staff to and from destinations, following a preplanned route according to a definite time schedule.
- Regulates heating, lighting and ventilation systems of bus for comfort of passengers.
- Drives bus carefully and in compliance with traffic regulations. Assumes responsibility for the safety of children in loading, unloading and transporting them to and from destinations. Signals children when to cross street or highway and assures that children are safely across upon departure from bus.
- Instructs children in safety precautions and practices.
- Maintains discipline; reports unruly behavior to appropriate Y Director.
- Inspects and clean bus interior. Checks water, gas, oil and mechanical condition to ensure that everything is in working order.
- Reports delays and accidents. Keeps operational records and makes simple reports. Reports defects or problems with vehicle to appropriate Director. Assures bus meets regular maintenance schedules.
- Performs related work as required.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of traffic and highway safety laws, rules and regulations, and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents. Ability to operate a bus in a safe and economical manner. Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to perform work requiring good physical condition. Ability to relate to students, parents and Y personnel. Ability to complete various forms and records, including updated route sheets, time sheets, field trip forms, incident and accident reports, mileage sheets, etc. Ability to read maps and follow written or verbal geographic directions.
- Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or completion of GED. Completion of first aid and driving courses. Training on highway safety rules and regulations.
- Licenses or Certifications: Appropriate State Driver license. Completion of a performance test in school bus operation. Must pass an annual physical examination.
WELLNESS COACH (Part-time and full-time openings)
Position Summary:
A Wellness Coach is the essential link between the member and their wellness goals. This motivated person must listen first and then have the ability to design wellness programming that is catered toward the individual. Personal training, group fitness instruction and wellness programming will be daily duties. Additional opportunities include outreach, assisting in wellness program design and supplemental continuing education. Aids in the retention of members and assisting members towards their wellness goals.
Essential Functions:
- Provides excellent customer service as it relates to members’ wellness needs.
- Develop, assist and implement wellness initiatives, programs and challenges.
- Leads group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the Y’s mission and goals.
- Conducts energizing, fun, safe and educational classes.
- Builds effective relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the Y.
- Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
- Assist with special events.
- Attend staff training and staff meetings.
- Perform outreach at various corporate and non-profit partners.
- Follow the Y’s policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
Qualifications:
- Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification (ACE, ACSM, AFAA) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification, national certification (ACE, ACSM, AFAA) in personal training or YMCA Foundations of Strength and Conditioning certification.
- Certification in areas of expertise.
- YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification within 60 days of hire.
- At least one year of experience personal training or teaching group fitness classes preferred.
- Basic knowledge of computers.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to conduct classes and activities relating to fitness.
- Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching and lifting.
WATER SAFETY (SWIM) INSTRUCTOR – Part-time
Position Summary:
The Water Safety (Swim) Instructor is a vital component to the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA. Swim Instructors must possess the ability to not only successfully provide quality, direct instruction and motivation to swimmers of all ages and skill abilities, but also provide our members and guests with top notch customer service. Swim Instructors must be able to enforce all pool rules in a courteous yet firm manner.
Swim Instructors do not have to be previously certified. The Y will train and certify all water safety instructors. Trainings are scheduled through April.
Swim Lessons vary in length from 30 – 45 minutes. Swim lessons may be taught in a group setting. Swim classes are available for all ages, with the youngest class catering to those 6 months old.
A successful instructor isn’t just someone who swims well. The successful swim instructors must have satisfactory stroke knowledge as well as the ability to communicate with swimmers of varying ages and swim skill degrees. Swim instructors must be able to plan lessons, use time effectively and efficiently and be prepared for many last minute changes. The ability to adapt to change is a must. A successful swim instructor is able to soothe the nerves of a novice swimmer and gain their trust in the water.
Swim Instructor will be required to keep meticulous paperwork for each student, and communicate with parents / guardians when appropriate about the progression of the student.

Essential Functions:
- Instruct swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with Y guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Maintain accurate class records; fill out Swim Report Cards.
- Develop positive relationships with members and class participants and provide motivational support and guidance.
- Attend all scheduled shifts and staff meetings as scheduled.
- Clock in and be on deck 15 minutes before class starts in order to prepare and get supplies ready for class.
- Encourage and correct students in their swimming abilities.
- Maintain constant supervision and control of class at all times.
- Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment.
- Maintain open communication about all aspects of job; complete all paperwork/records and turn them in to the Sports and Recreation Director and/or Coordinator.
- Follow all Y policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Encourages member and parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Basic First Aid certification within 30 days of hire date.
- At least 16 years of age.
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent.
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
Physical Demands:
Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
JANITORIAL – Part-time
Position Summary:
Cleans and sanitizes assigned areas, including such duties as mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and trash removal. May complete duties related to window washing, meeting set up, pool cleaning, locker rooms, bathrooms and other related responsibilities. Starting salary: $8.00 per hour.
Essential Functions:
- Completes all duties listed on the daily schedule and maintains upkeep of assigned areas and equipment. Duties include, but are not limited to, wet and dust mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, pool cleaning and general cleaning.
- Operates related motorized and non-motorized equipment.
- Records and reports all needed repairs; repairs as directed.
- Ensures YMCA building and property is secure during shift and report incidents and hazardous conditions to supervisor.
- Replaces soap, paper towels and other supplies.
- May set up furniture for events.
Qualifications:
- Six months or more of related experience preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals and other documents.
- Ability to report and record maintenance requests.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment preferred.
- Basic understanding of the upkeep and care of equipment.
- Understanding of cleaning compounds and chemicals, and their safe, efficient use.
Physical Demands:
- Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out essential duties.
- Ability to erect and stand on ladders and platforms at heights up to 30 feet.
- Ability to work with cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray and aerosol forms.
- Ability to clean equipment, and operate motorized equipment as needed.
- Ability to work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
- Ability to perform essential maintenance to facility or equipment which may involve, but not limited to the following activities: semi – reaching to full-reach overhead; crouching; kneeling; shoveling; carrying, working in narrow and/or confining spaces: underground, overhead, and at ground level; twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs; and lying on stomach and/or back.
LIFEGUARD – Part-time Days
Position Summary:
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with Y policies and procedures. On-deck shifts normally do not exceed 3.5 hours per day. Starting salary: $7.25 to $8.00, depending on qualifications and experience.
Essential Functions:
- Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with Y policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
- Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the Y and/or the state Health Department code.
- Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Perform chemical testing as required, and takes appropriate action if needed.
- Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 16 (15 may be allowed with special exceptions).
- Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
- Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding and Certification.
- Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
- Must be able to remain alert.
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
- Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distances.
