Who Are We?
The Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA has been an essential part of the Siouxland community for 130 years. As a diverse, non-profit organization, all members, volunteers, staff and contributors are joined by a shared commitment to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
What Do We Stand For?
At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone – regardless of age, income or background – has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. We work to provide fun, safe, affordable and quality programs that build a healthy mind, body and spirit.
Programs and Services
The Y has year-round opportunities for families of all ages and individuals of all physical abilities. Programs include cancer patient wellness, youth sports (soccer, t-ball, flag football, basketball), chronic disease prevention classes (Parkinson’s, MS, type 2 diabetes, arthritis), swimming lessons, a summer day camp, personal training, group exercise classes, child care, CPR/first aid training, a volunteer project group and so much more!
The Y also partners with a wide variety of non-profit organizations, businesses and government entities to provides support, guidance and resources needed to achieve healthier community.
Need for Support
Annually, the Y awards more than $350,000 in financial assistance and scholarship to give everyone a chance to learn, grow and thrive at the Y. We count on the generosity of our members, partners and community to keep our doors open to whoever needs a place to go to become more healthy, confident, connected and secure.
We also rely heavily on the work of volunteers, who make it possible for over 3,300 kids to play sports every year.
Established in 1886, the Sioux City YMCA operated in a former church until its first facility was built on 7th and Pierce Streets in Sioux City in 1892. The Y next moved to 722 Nebraska Street in 1956. Now known as the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA, our current 62,000 square foot facility overlooking the Missouri River from South Sioux City opened in January 2008.
Who Was Norm Waitt Sr.?
Sioux City native Norm Waitt Sr. made his mark in the cattle business. Norm and wife Joan had four children (including Gateway Computers founders Norm Jr. and Ted Waitt). In retirement, Norm turned his focus to philanthropy and left a lasting legacy all across Siouxland. After his death in 2003, Norm Waitt Jr. honored his father – always a champion of physical activity – by naming the new YMCA facilities after him.
