YMCA SWIM PROGRAM INFORMATION

Swim Starters

Parent and Child

Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment, emphasizing fundamental skills such as body position exploration, bubble-blowing techniques, and essential safety practices. The curriculum is designed to foster comfort and confidence in the water while laying the groundwork for future swimming abilities.

Safety Around Water

The curriculum for Safety Around Water is made up of Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced stages. The primary focus of the program is helping all students achieve the benchmark skills taught in the Intermediate stage. The Beginner and Advanced stages exist to meet students where they are.

Swim Basics & Strokes

Siouxland YMCA Swimming Programs teach water safety and swimming skills for all ages. Swimmers gain comfort and confidence through safe habits and underwater exploration. For older students, we refine stroke techniques and advanced safety skills, promoting well-being and a lifetime of physical activity. Join us for Stages 1-6!

Safety Around Water

Beginner

This stage is designed to enhance comfort with underwater exploration and introduce fundamental self-rescue skills, performed with guidance. It is ideal for students who have not yet achieved voluntary submersion, providing them with the foundational skills and confidence needed for more advanced aquatic activities.

Intermediate

This stage focuses on promoting independent forward movement in the water and developing basic self-rescue skills. Students are prepared for this level if they are capable of front and back floating unaided. The program aims to enhance their aquatic mobility and self-sufficiency, laying the groundwork for more advanced swimming techniques.

Advanced

This stage is designed to enhance swim stamina and endurance. Students are eligible for this level if they can independently paddle across the pool on their front and back for a measurable distance. The focus is on building sustained swimming ability and increasing overall water proficiency.
